Course Description

This 8-week, non-credit, self-paced and fully asynchronous English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course is designed for first-year, non-native English-speaking Electrical Engineering students. Through weekly integrated learning modules, students independently engage with engineering-related texts, lectures, diagrams, data visualizations, and problem-solving scenarios while developing academic reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and critical-thinking skills. The course emphasizes the effective communication of technical information and provides flexible opportunities for students to progress through course materials at their own pace within each module. Students learn to interpret, analyze, discuss, and present engineering concepts using appropriate academic and discipline-specific language, preparing them to participate more confidently in academic and professional engineering contexts.

Course Objectives

By the end of this 8-week course, students will:

Reading

  • Identify main ideas and supporting details in engineering-related texts.
  • Interpret technical diagrams, charts, and data displays.

Writing

  • Write clear academic paragraphs and short technical summaries.
  • Produce objective descriptions of processes, systems, and data.

Listening

  • Understand the main points of introductory engineering lectures and presentations.
  • Take effective notes from short academic videos.

Speaking

  • Explain engineering concepts using appropriate technical vocabulary.
  • Deliver short recorded academic presentations.

Vocabulary

  • Use core STEM and Electrical Engineering terminology accurately.
  • Apply common academic vocabulary from engineering contexts.

Academic Skills

  • Summarize information from multiple sources.
  • Practice academic integrity through paraphrasing and citation.
  • Communicate information using evidence and data.
